Gray Named Roseburg SVP, General Counsel

Springfield, Ore. – Roseburg Forest Products has announced that attorney Stuart Gray will join the company’s executive team as Senior Vice President and General Counsel, effective Aug. 7. Gray will play a key role as chief legal counsel and senior advisor on company strategies and their implementation, with direct involvement in complex business transactions and critical contracts.

“This is a new role for Roseburg, which has never before had a general counsel internal to the organization,” Roseburg President and CEO Grady Mulbery said. “As the company grows and expands its national footprint, it has become clear that we need someone with Stuart’s experience, expertise and insight to help us execute on our plans.”

Gray most recently served as Vice President and Deputy General Counsel for Sears Holdings Corporation in Chicago, where for two years he led the legal teams supporting home services, environmental, merchandising, product safety, regulatory, operations, online and automotive centers. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in communications from the University of Utah in 1997 and his Juris Doctor from Emory University School of Law in 2000. He also earned an MBA from Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Sloan School of Management in 2016.

Prior to attending law school, Gray worked for many years as a cabinet maker and finish carpenter. After law school, he joined Freeman Mathis & Gary LLP in Atlanta as a construction and commercial litigator for three years. He spent the following 12 years in progressive roles of responsibility at The Home Depot Inc.’s legal department in Atlanta, where he managed commercial and construction litigation across North America and was an associate general counsel for its home services, pro supply, operations and real estate departments.

In his new role, Gray will act as a strategic business partner by providing advice and oversight in numerous areas, including ethics, financial transactions, transparency, and regulatory and governmental changes and compliance. His scope of responsibilities will include environmental compliance; Director of Environmental Affairs Ellen Porter will report directly to him. Gray will assist in this broad scope of legal functions tied to various Roseburg business ventures and operations, while also overseeing the work of outside counsel.

“We have long been blessed with excellent outside legal expertise, and now we will have a general counsel to coordinate their ongoing work as our pace of change continues to increase,” Mulbery said.
